5 Habits for Gum Health

Gum health may impact your overall health. Periodontal (Gum) disease is not only the leading cause of tooth loss, but also has been shown to raise the risk factor for several potential health issues including stroke and heart disease. 

Even if you have beautiful pearly whites and no cavities, you still run the risk of developing gum disease. In fact, half of Americans aged 30 and above (64 million) have a more advanced form of gum disease known as Periodontitis. 

If you currently suffer from chronic bad breath or gums that are red, swollen or tender, you may have periodontal disease. Left untreated, gum disease may lead to inflammation, bleeding, loosening teeth, recession and other more serious complications. Here are five simple habits to keep your gums healthy:

1. Floss Regularly

Studies say that only 5% of American floss regularly. Gums not properly cared for with regular flossing can become an open door to unhealthy bacteria entering your blood stream. The bacteria in between your teeth can potentially cause far more damage than the bacteria on your teeth.

2. Massage Your Gums

Though it may sound a bit strange, a regular gum massage will help maintain healthy circulation throughout your gums. No expertise necessary. Simply put a little peppermint or eucalyptus oil on your finger. Then, gently rub all areas of your gums in a circular motion. Not only will it help sustain healthy gums, you may enjoy the fresh boost it gives your entire mouth.

3. Brush Gently

Using fluoride toothpaste with an ADA seal, we recommend brushing at least twice a day for 2 minutes each time. Regular brushing is the number one habit to protect your teeth and your gums. Be careful not to use too much pressure because pressing too hard can damage your gums. Let the bristles do the work.

4. Swish Daily

Used regularly after flossing and brushing, mouthwash can help prevent cavities and plaque buildup, strengthen enamel, and kill bacteria. Healthy teeth and a cleaner mouth leads to healthier gums and a more beautiful smile. As an added bonus, daily swishing will freshen your breath for those who get close to you. When choosing a therapeutic mouthwash, make sure to look for the ADA seal.
