Are Bleeding Gums Serious?

If your gums bleed when you brush, you are not alone. It’s possible that you are simply brushing too hard, but you should not ignore this critical symptom. It may point to a much more significant health concern – the beginning stages of gum disease.

When plaque is not sufficiently removed during regular oral hygiene, it begins to attack the healthy gum tissue surrounding your teeth. The result is called Gingivitis, or the first stage of gum disease.

Is my gum health a serious issue?

Yes. Your gum health may directly impact your overall health. Periodontal (Gum) disease is not only the leading cause of tooth loss, but also has been shown to raise the risk factor for several potential health issues including stroke and heart disease.

While gum disease typically begins with Gingivitis, half of Americans aged 30 and above (64 million) have a more advanced form of gum disease known as Periodontitis.

How do I know if I have gum disease?

Sometimes the early stages of gum disease can be invisible and painless. However, here is a brief list of some common and noticeable symptoms:

1. Bleeding when brushing, flossing or eating

2. Tender, swollen, red or painful gums

3. Noticeable gum recession leading to longer looking teeth

4. Bad breath

5. Loosening teeth

6. Toothaches

At Greentree, we believe a healthy mouth begins with healthy gums. If you are suffering from any of the symptoms listed above, you may have periodontal disease. Left untreated, these issues may lead to increased inflammation and eventual gum recession. As the gums pull back from the crown of the tooth, the condition may worsen. Early diagnosis and treatment can preserve the health of your teeth and gums.

How can I be sure if I have gum disease?

While the symptoms listed above do not guarantee that you are on your way to Periodontal disease, we highly recommend that you bring any gum issues to our attention. Catching it early is key to stopping it before it has a wider impact. Our highly experienced team of dental professionals will be able to quickly assess your situation and recommend treatment solutions.

Please contact the Greentree team today if you have questions about your gum health.
