Implants are a great way to replace missing teeth. They look, feel, and function like natural teeth do not need to be taken in and out like full or partial dentures.
What is an implant?
Implants are made of a titanium insert that is placed into the jawbone beneath the gums and acts as an artificial root for a replacement tooth or bridge. After the implant is placed, a replacement tooth can be created and attached.
Do implants have any other advantages?
One additional benefit of implants is that they can actually strengthen and protect the surrounding bone and teeth. Normally when a tooth is lost, the nearby bone begins to deteriorate and the adjacent teeth are more vulnerable to fracturing. When an implant is placed quickly after the tooth is lost, it can integrate and will actually stimulate the nearby bone to rebuild. Once a replacement tooth is attached, it also protects the surrounding teeth from fracturing.
